Sorakaya Pachadi / Bottle Gourd in curd

I always wonder what to do with Sorakaya or bottle gourd. I know only one dish with this vegetable.. sorakaya pulusu. Yeah i know u are wondering why would i buy it if i don't know how to cook this... It looks so cute sitting in the corner and nobody bothers to take it. Everyone goes for brinjals, potatoes, bhendi, etc. Some one has to take it right?... so i go for it and end up thinking what to do with it...this Pulusu i make is a tangy soup with sorakaya or any other vegetable and tomatoes. But i was really bored of pulusu that day and i saw this awesome recipe in Pushpa's blog "Taste as you cook" . I tried it immediately and hubby dear loved it both with roti and rice. Thank you Pushpa for sharing this wonderful and healthy recipe.

Here it goes...

Ingredients:

1 small bottle gourd
1/2 onion
5 green chillies
Salt to taste
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon chana dal
1/2 teaspoon urad wash
1 sprig curry leaves
1 1/2 cup yogurt
  • Peel and chop the bottle gourd into small pieces.
  • In a pan add the bottle gourd pieces, salt and very little water and let them boil until the pieces are transparent and soft.
  • Once the pieces are soft, set them aside. In the same pan add some oil and when its hot add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, chana and urad dal. when they turn brown add curry leaves and finely chopped onions and green chillies.
  • When the onions become transparent add bottle gourd pieces and switch of the stove. Let it cool.
  • In a bowl whip up the yogurt and add some salt. Add the mixture and mix well.
  • Serve hot with roti or rice.
